A reputation for midges in West Loch Tarbert, Jura.

West Loch Tarbert on Jura is always worth a visit with its raised beaches,....

...dykes, arches and caves.

It is a wild place but it is not totally without sight of the hand of man. Glenbatrick Lodge is the holiday cottage of Lord Astor. It sits on the south shore under the slopes of  Beinn Shiantaidh, 757m, one of the Paps of Jura.

There were some delightful sandy shores backed by raised beaches but it was still a bit early to set up camp and the place has a fearsome reputation for midges.

  2. Greetings Rick, you chose a great time of year to go camping on Jura! I have camped there several times, a few weeks later and that particular campsite is a midge ridden hell! That's why we moved on.

What a great trip you had! May I enquire how you shuttled between Kennacraig and Seil?

    :o)

  3. We had planned to return to Arduanie where we left the cars...but there was a bit of westerly swell and easterly wind so we decided not to go through Corryvreckan... Thus the return via Calmac and a scary taxi trip back to the cars. 135k covered in 5 days, not counting the messing about in West Loch Tarbert.

  5. Hi Rick a good decision on the Corryvreckan! If you take trolleys, an alternative would be the portage across Jura at Tarbert.

Thank you Peter, midges are what protects our coasts from high rise hotels and other tourist developments!

    :o)
