On the second day of our trip to the sun drenched Sound of Arisaig, David, Mike, Phil and myself got our kayaks ready on the beach by the Glenuig Inn.
Meanwhile, Donald got the Guppy ready and was on the water before us. The Guppy is an F-Rib 275 with a 6HP Yamaha 4 stroke outboard. Donald set off and within...
...minutes was literally a dot on the horizon. He was going to try and get as far west as he could along the Ardnamurchan peninsula and then return to meet us at Ardtoe at the eastern end of the peninsula.
The waters of Glenuig Bay were crystal clear and we set off...
...towards the mouth of the bay in high spirits which soared even higher...
...as we emerged into the open waters of the Sound beyond and caught sight of the Cuillin mountains of Rum rising above the long ridge of Eigg. The clear March air meant we could even make out details on the distant mountain ridges.
David had fallen behind as he had agreed to help test the P&H Scorpio HV in CLX and he wanted to get a perfect fit. David has had a bad back for decades but has found this kayak to be the most comfortable ever.

ReplyDeleteSuch clear calm water! New reader here - I recently found your blog when looking for paddling opportunities/ideas in the UK. I'll be in Bristol in a couple months, and also hope to make it to Scotland in the near future. I'd been planning a backpacking trip in the Isle of Skye but it somehow never occurred to me to go paddling there. Do you have any recommendations for high quality sea kayak rentals in the area? I always find that to be the biggest challenge when paddling far from home.

Hi Nena I hope you have a great visit to Scotland. The main rental shop on the Scottish West Coast is Sea Kayak Oban but if you are travelling without a car that would be no good for you in Skye. However, Skyak is based on Skye. It is primarily a tuition and guided tour company but they may hire to an experienced kayaker such as yourself. You can launch from their front door but depending on the weather it might be better to go on one of their guided trips as they can trailer the kayaks to the most suitable location. Both companies are run by really great folk. Gave a great visit to Scotland. :o)
